Located in the North West of the African continent, Morocco is a beautiful mix of influences that make it the ideal combination of the delights of Mediterranean Spain and sub-Saharan Africa. We invite you to discover in this article the richness and diversity of Morocco’s cultural heritage.
Casablanca: Traditions and Art Deco Architecture
In the middle of the 18th century, Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah decided to rebuild the ancient Anfa (the hill), a small Berber town dating from the 7th century, from its ruins. The old medina, still partially enclosed by ramparts, became the first district of Casablanca. You will find an atmosphere of traditions and a thousand small trades in the maze of alleys and workshops.
The other side of the city appeared during the first half of the 20th century. Casablanca became the showcase of Art Deco architecture and one of the most urbanized cities in Morocco. The Habous district, located a few steps from the city center, is exceptional in Morocco.
The architectural tradition of the city continues today with the inauguration of the Hassan II mosque on August 30, 1993. This 200 m high mosque is one of the largest in the world. The lively Mâarif district is the very example of modern Casablanca. The young Moroccan jet set frequents its luxury boutiques and trendy establishments located in the shadow of the Twin Center. You should also visit Anfa, the posh district of Casablanca. The Mohammed V boulevard, located in the center of the city, has preserved its arcades under which abound stores and restaurants on nearly 2 km.
In the evening, you can take the coastal road of Aïn-Diab between the lighthouse of El Hank and the mausoleum of Sidi Bou Abderrahmane. This coast is the seaside resort of Casablanca. It has swimming pools, public and private beaches.
Marrakech : One of the most beautiful and famous cities in Morocco
Marrakech was founded in 1062 by Abu Bakr ibn Umar, who was the second cousin of King Youssef Ibn Tachfine. The city began as a community trade center for the Maghreb and Sub-Sahara and was mainly inhabited by Berber farmers since Neolithic times. Today, the city serves as the best commercial center, where entrepreneurs explore beautiful products and services in their markets.
Over time, Marrakech has experienced tremendous growth, establishing itself as a cultural and religious center. The aesthetic beauty of Marrakech is the result of the collaboration of Andalusia and the designs of the Sahara and West Africa.
After independence, Marrakech became an exciting tourist destination. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the city became the best place for many Western rock stars, which doubled the number of tourists visiting Morocco. In 1994, the World Trade Organization was established with the signing of the Marrakech Agreement.
Nowadays, the city now flourishes with elegance and beauty, the number of world-class hotels offering excellent services has increased enormously. It is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco and the world.
Agadir: one of the most beautiful cities and bays in Morocco
Agadir is the best destination to enjoy the sun and the sea. With its miraculous climate, offering a minimum of 300 days of sunshine per year, and its 10 km long beach, Agadir has everything you need for a great seaside vacation. The city has one of the most beautiful bays in the world and a marina. The latter can accommodate several hundred pleasure boats.
Destroyed by the 1960 earthquake, the kasbah no longer has its crenellated ramparts. Nevertheless, this elevated site offers a complete view of the bay, the port and the new town.
The coastal road allows you to stroll along a large part of the seafront, a popular place to walk at any time of day. It offers a panoramic view of the entire bay. Don’t miss visiting the port which is in constant effervescence.
Slightly south of the city center, the Medina is a place to discover with great pleasure. This place was rebuilt in the 1990s by the Italian architect Coco Polizzi. With a careful urban planning, craftsmen, restaurants, it is an original and audacious success, where the Moroccan soul still survives. The jewelry souk and the Moorish café are well worth a visit.
Places like the Paradise Valley are spectacular and worth a visit. We recommend you to visit them if you are looking for excursions.
Tangier: Cradle of art and literature
Among the most beautiful cities in Morocco, Tangier is a true icon of Moroccan history, multiculturalism and art. It is a lively city with a vibe and plenty to do and enjoy.
Located at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier was once a destination of choice for the literary and artistic community of the 1960s. Although it is no longer home to famous artists and writers, it is still a place where you can find traces of art during your Moroccan vacation.
The best time to go to Tangier is from September to November and also from March to May. This is the time when the weather is perfect and it is not so hot. During the low season, you have a better chance of staying in a riad at a good price.
The medina or old town is a lively place. Its alleys are filled with teahouses and stores. This place has always fascinated artists, Eugène Delacroix, Henri Matisse, Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, Jean Genet… to name a few.
All of them fell under the spell of the Petit Socco square and its cafés, notably the famous Tingis. You can take a pleasant walk in the Mendoubia park located north of the Grand Socco square. A giant banyan tree and a dragon tree, said to be 800 years old, enhance the visit.
The museum of the former American legation is at the southern end. Its paintings are on display along with a special room dedicated to the American writer Paul Bowles.
Fez : One of the most beautiful and traditional cities in Morocco
Traditionally, your visit to Fez should begin at the Bab Boujlloud gate. The first monument to visit is the vast medersa Bou Inania, with its cedar woodwork, its sculpted stucco, its marble and onyx decoration. By continuing the street Talaa Kebira (big rise), you will admire in particular the zaouïa Tijani. This place is a sanctuary of a religious brotherhood, and the souk of the instrument makers before arriving at the mzara of the former sovereign Moulay Idriss located at the place where he took the decision to build the city.
After passing the babouche sellers, you arrive at the En-Nejjarine square and the cabinetmakers’ souk. The beautifully carved foundouk (caravanserai) in the square houses the museum of woodworking arts and crafts. The kissaria (covered market), where jewelry and fine fabrics are sold, is nearby. Next door, you can admire the most visited and revered attraction in Fez : the zawiya of Moulay Idriss, the city’s founder.
Your walk continues by the Es-Seffarine square, the place of the coppersmiths, then by the district of the tanners located just before the Andalusian district with its mosque and the medersa Es-Sahrij. Your walk ends with the old Dar Batha palace whose Arab-Andalusian style makes it a must visit museum.
