In the middle of the 18th century, Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah decided to rebuild the ancient Anfa (the hill), a small Berber town dating from the 7th century, from its ruins. Destroyed by the 1960 earthquake, the kasbah no longer has its crenellated ramparts. Nevertheless, this elevated site offers a complete view of the bay, the port and the new town.

The coastal road allows you to stroll along a large part of the seafront, a popular place to walk at any time of day. It offers a panoramic view of the entire bay. Don’t miss visiting the port which is in constant effervescence.

Located at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier was once a destination of choice for the literary and artistic community of the 1960s. Although it is no longer home to famous artists and writers, it is still a place where you can find traces of art during your Moroccan vacation.

The best time to go to Tangier is from September to November and also from March to May. This is the time when the weather is perfect and it is not so hot. During the low season, you have a better chance of staying in a riad at a good price.

The medina or old town is a lively place. Its alleys are filled with teahouses and stores. This place has always fascinated artists, Eugène Delacroix, Henri Matisse, Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, Jean Genet… to name a few.

All of them fell under the spell of the Petit Socco square and its cafés, notably the famous Tingis. You can take a pleasant walk in the Mendoubia park located north of the Grand Socco square. A giant banyan tree and a dragon tree, said to be 800 years old, enhance the visit.

The museum of the former American legation is at the southern end. Its paintings are on display along with a special room dedicated to the American writer Paul Bowles.

The first monument to visit is the vast medersa Bou Inania, with its cedar woodwork, its sculpted stucco, its marble and onyx decoration. By continuing the street Talaa Kebira (big rise), you will admire in particular the zaouïa Tijani. This place is a sanctuary of a religious brotherhood, and the souk of the instrument makers before arriving at the mzara of the former sovereign Moulay Idriss located at the place where he took the decision to build the city.

After passing the babouche sellers, you arrive at the En-Nejjarine square and the cabinetmakers’ souk. The beautifully carved foundouk (caravanserai) in the square houses the museum of woodworking arts and crafts. The kissaria (covered market), where jewelry and fine fabrics are sold, is nearby. Next door, you can admire the most visited and revered attraction in Fez : the zawiya of Moulay Idriss, the city’s founder.

Your walk continues by the Es-Seffarine square, the place of the coppersmiths, then by the district of the tanners located just before the Andalusian district with its mosque and the medersa Es-Sahrij. Your walk ends with the old Dar Batha palace whose Arab-Andalusian style makes it a must visit museum.
