Vacation in Marrakech: remarkable increase in tourist arrivals

The regional tourism delegation is optimistic for 2023. It’s claiming that Marrakech’s tourism sector is showing signs of recovery and is returning to growth. Morocco’s red city, Marrakech, witnessed a remarkable 63% increase in tourist arrivals in May. This is in comparison to the same period in 2019, according to new data from the Marrakech regional tourism delegation.  The increase in the number of tourists is due to strong domestic and overseas tourism. 

Domestic tourism recorded a staggering 167% increase, while tourists from Italy rose by 23%. Arrivals from the UK rose by 56%, while those from France increased by 39%. In addition, visitors from Spain increased by 41%, while those from Belgium rose by 39%. The number of nights also showed an upward trend, recording a 51% increase year-on-year. 

This positive trend is also reflected in room occupancy, which improved by 23 points in May to reach a 72%. Tourist growth has remained steady throughout the year, with Marrakech experiencing an 11% increase in overnight stays and a 12% increase in arrivals from January to May 2023 compared to the same period in 2019. . The regional tourism delegation expressed optimism for 2023. Marrakech’s tourism sector is showing signs of recovery and is returning to the path of growth.  

Vacation in Marrakech: the city airport records a post-COVID recovery rate of 113%.

According to official figures, the airport welcomed over 1.7 million passengers in the first quarter of 2023. Marrakech-Menara International Airport welcomed more than 1.7 million passengers in the first quarter of 2023. This number marks a 113% recovery compared with the same period in 2019. Figures released by Morocco’s Office National des Aéroports (ONDA) show that Marrakech airport welcomed more than 640,000 passengers in March alone, compared with 580,000 during the same period in 2019.

According to ONDA’s latest civil aviation travel report, this figure equates to a recovery rate of 111%. In the first quarter of 2023, Moroccan airports recorded around 6 million commercial traffic, up 5% on 2019. The report also shows a 96% recovery rate for airport movements, with over 46,000 recorded across Morocco. Morocco’s tourism and transport sectors have both shown steady growth and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, which massively affected both sectors. One of the North African country‘s most important sectors, tourism revenues reached over $8 billion in 2022, with a recovery rate of 112% compared to 2019.

Vacation in Marrakech: World Cup success boosts tourism in Morocco

Reports suggest that Morocco’s success at the World Cup has enhanced the country’s global reputation. Morocco’s triumph at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar already seems to be bearing fruit for the North African country, with a noticeable rise in tourism since the tournament, which many attribute in part to the historic performance of the Atlas Lions.

Marrakech in particular seems to be benefiting from the influx of tourists, and travel booking site Marrakech Best Of has taken to Instagram to alert travelers to the crazy demand the city is receiving. Marrakech’s tourism board said that the number of tourists visiting Morocco in 2022 reached 10.9 million, a significant increase on the previous year’s 3.7 million.

Following the World Cup, a report by Dubai-based media intelligence organization CARMA said the performance had improved the overall perception of Morocco at all levels. Google searches for the country jumped by 273% after the tournament, and social media posts increased by 764%, according to CARMA.
